Universal Logistics Case Study

TOPIC • Manufacturer, Shippers & 3PLs

Universal Logistics sees an increase in efficiency and customer satisfaction by investing in technology for yard management.

Universal provides services that include cross docks, consolidations, sequencing, sub-assembly, kitting, repacking, returnable container management, and much more. Universal’s facility located in Romulus, Michigan operated by its subsidiary LINC Logistics, supports leading automotive manufacturers and component suppliers and is one of the largest cross-docks in the United States.

The company was looking for a solution that could help the local team operate their yards more efficiently and track in real-time six yard trucks and over 800 trailer visits daily.

Universal selected Kaleris’ advanced yard management system (YMS) for their cross-dock facility. The highlight of the solution is that it provides the logistics company with real-time visibility into yard truck and trailer locations using passive radio frequency identification (RFID) and global positioning system (GPS) and online yard software that enabled them to manage their yards from any device with an internet connection.

The solution enabled guards to significantly improve gate velocity, lowering queuing of trailers, and direct drivers to an exact drop location or dock door.

Managers, now, locate trailers and assign moves to yard truck drivers online. The drivers receive the move requests via an in-cab touchscreen display increasing trailer moves velocity and accuracy.

All the information is electronically recorded and the company is using the data and reports in the system to increase productivity, reduce costs, and provide a better service to its automotive customers
