A yard rarely becomes difficult to manage all at once.
It starts small. Density in the yard begins to rise. Container flows shift. A vessel schedule changes. A block fills faster than expected. None of it looks urgent at first. But as conditions keep shifting, space tightens, moves pile up, and planners are left with fewer options and less time to respond.
The challenge isn’t simply knowing what’s happening in the yard. It’s recognizing when today’s conditions are likely to become tomorrow’s problem.
Container volumes keep climbing, and the pace has picked up. World container port throughput reached 920 million TEU in 2024, up 6.9% year over year, a sharp jump from the 0.6% growth rates recorded in both 2022 and 2023. Zoom out further and the trend holds: port volumes have grown roughly 3% a year on average over the past decade, adding 248 million TEU, or 37%, in total since 2014.
Most of today’s TOS and operational tools give planners strong visibility into the current state of the yard, but it has limits. It doesn’t necessarily tell planners:

That moves the conversation from “What is likely to happen?” to “What should we do about it?”
