TEAGTL Upskills Local Talent to Unlock Improvements in Operational Efficiency and Reduction in Vessel Waiting Times

Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited’s (TEAGTL) foremost priority as it began operating Container Terminal 2 (CT2) was to develop the terminal into a world-class container handling facility with benchmark levels of productivity and efficiency.

As part of TEAGTL’s commitment to the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) in this regard, TEAGTL partnered with Navis, the market-leading TOS solution from Kaleris, to deploy Navis N4 4.0 at the terminal. Navis solutions are used by some of the largest and most efficient ports globally, with a long history of proven efficacy in improving port productivity and efficiency. The partnership included training local talent on how to optimize operations using the TOS. By developing their capabilities, the TEAGTL team is uniquely equipped with the skillsets to build the premier terminal in East Africa.

Adani’s considerable expertise in managing ports and terminals, combined with Navis’ robust TOS and the efforts of Adani’s talented team, resulted in a successful deployment that continues to scale up efficiency and streamline operations.

“The deployment of Navis TOS is a significant milestone,” said Shahzad Athar, Director at TEAGTL. “It symbolises our commitment to Tanzania Port Authority and the country of Tanzania and its people, and our efforts to upskill Tanzanian youth and develop a talent pool for the future. Navis N4 will enable us to achieve our vision of building a state-of-the-art container handling facility that will in the long-term serve as the Gateway to East Africa and an important hub for regional transit trade.”

The transformative journey reduced vessel waiting times in a short period, a matter of critical concern to the trade and local authorities. Since the N4 deployment in June 2024, average vessel waiting times have shown continuous improvement, with a considerable reduction in waiting period from June to September 2024.

Other key benefits include:

  • 40% reduction in unproductive RTG moves
  • Faster vessel operations
  • Automation of permit issuance
  • 15 teammates completed superuser training, racking up a cumulative 8,640 hours of training and practice.

“TEAGTL’s success at Container Terminal 2 (CT2) is a testament to the power of our partnership and the capabilities of Navis’ industry-leading N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS). Through the deployment of Navis N4, TEAGTL has significantly reduced vessel waiting times, improved operational efficiency, and upskilled local talent. Their investment in training 15 superusers with over 8,600 hours of dedicated practice showcases their commitment to both operational excellence and local workforce development. Together, we’ve enabled TEAGTL to build a world-class terminal, transforming Tanzania into a key player in regional trade, supported by Adani’s vast expertise in port operations.” said Daniel Leask, Vice President of Sales, EMEA at Kaleris.

The new superuser colleagues include Blandina Daraja, Elibariki E Muna, Emmanuel Luhwago, Ezekiel Lukas Kuwoko, Geofrey Hiza, Hassan Magetta, Ibrahim Fungafunga, Joseph Kilongo, Ludovick Maleko, Mathew Kapalila, Mathias Kessy, Michael Urio, Mnanka Sira, Paschal Misiru, Richard Joachim, all of whom are now extremely well versed in using advanced technology to enhance terminal operations.

Jignesh Vania, Chief Technology Officer, expressed his appreciation of Navis’ role in the successful implementation of the N4 TOS, saying, “The teamwork and dedication, combined with our cumulative expertise, has been instrumental in achieving this significant milestone. This is the first step towards building a robust digital foundation and is a critical initiative in the terminal’s transformation journey. The seamless integration, speed of execution, and the positive impact it has had on our operations are truly commendable.”
